Written, directed, and produced by emigrees from Nazi Germany, this 1944 film was their attempt to portray the subjugation of women under Hitler’s regime, as they had seen it. The ideals and rights of women are stripped away as women are expected to devote their lives to the Nazi cause, including bearing Aryan children and raising them to become regimented members of the Reich. Not all comply, and the tension between villains and heroines is palpable. What did America know? Click Here to Download Printable PDF

Sophie Scholl was a fearless leader of an underground student resistance group in Munich called “The White Rose”. She and her brother Hans were arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 for distributing pamphlets on campus. During their “trial” they boldly called for freedom, rights, and personal responsibility. Sophie never once backed down even in the face of certain death. Using the historical records of her interrogations and trial, this Oscar nominated 2005 film re-creates the last six days of her young life. A tense and compelling story of courage in…

This film included Hollywood’s first overt presentation of the Nazi persecution of Jews. Released in 1944, it tells the story of a near-future, post-war tribunal of a Nazi officer. Through flashbacks dramatizing the testimony of witnesses, we see the officer’s transition from a WWI vet to an unrepentant Nazi mass murderer. For the 1944 movie goer, this film shockingly and openly presented the reality of cattle cars loaded with Jews on their way to death. A gripping drama about human evil which was eerily predictive of the 1960…

In this 2006 documentary, Howard Triest tells the story of his family’s experiences as German Jews and the choices they made as the Nazi oppression became unbearable. Choiceless choices. Howard fled in 1939 at age 16. His sister was rescued in France and became a rescuer of other children. Howard returned to Europe as an American soldier and then served as an interpreter for the psychiatrists at the Nuremberg Trial. His depictions of the defendants are incisive, if not chilling. Filmed in five countries, historic film and photographs are…
