Remembrance, Reflections, and Responsibility
HERC has a special role to play in understanding and combatting antisemitism and other forms of hatred. Our current challenge is to find a way to contribute to that goal that is distinct from the many other worthwhile initiatives.
The activities planned reflect our mission that historical knowledge, based in lessons and shared through workshops, programs, and special events, helps us understand the present and shape the future. We don’t need antisemitism to remind us – it is at the core of our mission. But we do need friends like you who will attend our events, spread the word, support our work, and keep the past present.
The Holocaust Education Resource Council (HERC), in conjunction with Temple Israel, Congregation Shomrei Torah, and the Tallahassee Jewish Federation, is pleased to invite the public to commemorate Yom HaShoah, the international Holocaust Remembrance Day. This free community event is set to commence on Sunday, May 5, at 2:00 pm at Temple Israel in Tallahassee, FL.
Guest speaker Roslyn Franken, author of Meant to Be: A True Story of Might, Miracles, and Triumph of the Human Spirit, will be presenting from her book that features her parents’ compelling World War II survival stories.
Following the speaker, the program will culminate in a participatory and meaningful ceremony led by Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky using Rabbi Adam Fisher’s book, An Everlasting Name. All are welcome to participate in additional Holocaust-themed readings, prayers and songs, candle lighting, and a special name reading commemoration.
We seek volunteers to read the names of the men, women, and children killed during the Holocaust as a symbolic and personal way of remembering these individuals.
Unfortunately, there is no single list of those known to have perished during the Holocaust. The list we are providing is a very small sample of names taken from archival documents at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Come join us and bring friends.
