Teaching the Holocaust – Beyond History

Feb 6, 2023

Thank you to all that ensure that programming for Holocaust education is offered to everyone. Recently, HERC provided presentations at schools where students were impacted and inspired to create history fair projects that went to the district level! We are excited to be pushing out even further and have scheduled workshops in five counties, reaching as far west as Escambia County. These workshops will help bring resources, materials and strategies to teachers and in turn impact tens of thousands of students!

In addition to workshops for educators, we also recently sent high school students on a field trip to the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. Students were asked to reflect on their experience and share their thoughts after the visit, and here is just some of what they had to say:

“It made me realize the Holocaust was such a big tragedy & it still affects people till this day”

“It has taught me a lot about the Holocaust & showed me that having hope goes a long way”

“This trip taught me to stand up for what you believe in and don’t be scared.”

“I can make more people aware & educated about the true events of the Holocaust”

Your generosity makes this possible. Despite the great reach of HERC, we continue to need support from donors like you, to ensure that we can serve more teachers and students.

The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

On this annual day of commemoration, the UN urges every member state to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.

As the leading Holocaust education resource center in North Florida, the Holocaust Education Resource Council is committed to preparing educators to teach the Holocaust across grade levels. This year, HERC will mark conducting twenty-one teacher training workshops for educators in the Big Bend area. The impact is enormous and has reached many students.

As we think of the importance of Holocaust education, we also think of the growing challenges we continue to face. Explicit expressions of antisemitism have become almost a daily occurrence. No matter who it comes from, the antisemitic rhetoric is escalating in its frequency and visibility.

That’s why we are asking for your continued support today. Antisemitism did not end with the Holocaust. We must work together to confront rising hate for education. Your gift of $50 or $100 or more will help teach the Holocaust and the lessons of today.

Don’t miss the films, Diary of Anne Frank play, and exhibit coming in the next few months. Many programs to look forward to and share to educate more with stories of courage and resilience. Your gift will ensure the lessons of history are taught, far and wide.
