What are the hold ups? What are the hurdles? I love to have these conversations with fellow educators while discussing Holocaust Education. For some of us, talking about the Holocaust might come naturally; we jump at the chance to share our knowledge and discuss among ourselves! For a vast number of teachers, this is not the case. After several conversations this month within the homeschool and public-school communities what I am hearing over and over again is, “I just don’t feel equipped.” I spoke with an educator this week that told me, “I am the social studies department head, I love learning about the Holocaust. I just don’t feel confident enough to share it with students.” That is where it is HERC’s time to shine. We have the knowledge, tools, and resources to help every educator in NorthWest Florida feel confident in teaching about the Holocaust. Building these relationships and inspiring teacher’s confidence in the subject matter is probably the most important step of Holocaust eduation, and I look forward to a school year full of growth.
