On the eve of Tisha B’Av (July 22–23, 1942), Nazi SS and police began the mass deportations of Jew citizens from the Warsaw Ghetto to the death camp Treblinka. This operation was called the Grossaktion Warschau or “Great Action” by the Nazis and was initiated on the order of SS Chief Heinrich Himmler. By 21 September 1942, around 300,000 Jews had been sent to Trebllinka and killed. Treblinka operated from 23 July 1942 - 19 October 1943 and it is estimated that c. 800, 000 - 900,000 Jewish men, women, and children were killed there in the gas chambers.
Tisha B'Av, the Ninth of Av, is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar because it marks the anniversary of numerous catastrophic events throughout Jewish history, most notably the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. In 2026 the dates of observance, 22 - 23 July, are the same as in 1942 when this tragedy occurred.

Today, June 4th, is Holocaust Survivor Day, which was initiated by the JCC (Jewish Community Centre) Krakow to recognize the contributions that survivors have made to society and to honor their legacies. Whereas International Holocaust Remembrance Day and Yom HaShoah focus on the lives of those who perished, Holocaust Survivor Day celebrates the lives and accomplishments of survivors.
Sadly, there are many inaccurate facts about Holocaust survivors circulating on the internet, including the untrue rumor that the last Holocaust survivor has died. According to new data released by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) in January 2026, there are an estimated 196,600 Jewish Holocaust survivors globally, living across more than 90 countries.
Holocaust Survivors are witnesses, but the responsibility of passing on the legacy of their testimonies lies with everyone who encounters them.
