Son of Holocaust survivor supports education to ensure stories are told. Mark Friedemann, of Tallahassee, believes in the vital importance of telling Holocaust survival stories, including that of his father.
There’s so much going on in the world right now. This story can go away one day because it has not been told. Mark’s father was born in 1927, and survived Auschwitz and other concentration camps. After the war, his father immigrated to the United States where he met his wife and had a family.
Mark’s father, Richard, remembers his day of liberation, “Attention SS! You are surrounded by American forces” a voice crisply announced in perfect German. “We have several tanks and infantry behind you,” the voice continued. “Lay down your arms and come out! If you try to harm your prisoners, you will be shot. You have four minutes to decide what you will do. After that, we will attack.
“His stories were hard to believe,” Mark says. Join Mark in preserving Holocaust memory by contributing to HERC.
It takes one person to destroy the world, it takes one person to save the world.
